~ Bacon Tacos

Recipe from Kathryn
Bacon Tacos....

To make the shells....
http://kathrynslowcarbkitchen.blogspot.com/2014/03/p3-provolone-taco-shells.html

Low Carb Provolone Taco Shells

Ingredients:
Round Provolone Cheese slices (I bought mine at Costco)
Garlic powder
Mexican Spices

Oven 350 degrees

Place Parchment paper on a cookie sheet, spray with cooking spray.... Evenly space 3 slices of Provolone Cheese on the parchment.. Sprinkle lightly with garlic powder and Mexican spices.... I used a salt-free Mexican seasoning blend, from "The Spice Hunter", bought at my local Co-op.....Bake for 10-11 minutes until color is right...Then, I immediately picked up each shell and place over the edge of a foil thickened edge of a pan to cool....you must do this quickly so they won't crack as they cool quickly and harden.....

I will now fill these tonight for dinner.... with taco fillings!.... Yummy!

Makes 3 shells....
each shell= 50 cal/ 0 net carbs/12 fat/11 prot.

Fill with Bacon, cheese, cilantro, avocado, sour cream and taco sauce.... Delicious!

    2. So when you used them later that night for tacos, did you somehow heat them up a little, or just stuff them and enjoy?

    1. I have never experienced that, Tiffany!..... Make sure you are using PARCHMENT Paper and not waxed paper...... Also, make sure to spray the parchment with nonstick spray.... Also you need to remove the cooked cheese immediately after cooking... I use the provolone cheese slices from Costco and it always turns out perfect.... Good luck!

    2. If you don't mind doing one at a time, you can make them in a non-stick saute pan. It works the same way and cooks faster, careful not too use high heat. They slide right out of the pan.

    3. Oh I agree!... A good nonstick pan works great if you are only making a couple.... but I now have discovered Nonstick baking sheets to put onto your baking sheet... OMG... So easy to use!... I just love them!... Try giving that a try!...

  7. What if you put the cheese slices on the rim of a larger mixing bowl after they come out of the oven. Would that work? What role does the aluminum foil play? These sounds super easy to make. Thank you for sharing!

    1. You can use anything you desire to make the shells into any form you wish.... I used the foil to make them into the form I wanted ...a bit thicker so I could add lots of goodies to my tacos... yum!.... Please check out the original provolone taco shell recipe.... I just added an update to share what I now use to cool my taco shells on.... It works GREAT!!!.... Thanks!!!

  10. So the cheese doesnt melt, its able to be picked up?

    ReplyDelete

    1. The cheese DOES melt as it is cooking.... It melts, gets bubbly, turns golden... When you take it out of the oven... you work quickly to get it up on a sharp edged spatula, and out onto a form... where it hardens into the taco shape... when it cools in about a couple minutes you can pick it up and fill it just as you would any taco... so yummy!

  11. Hi Kathryn! Thank you for this receipe, it allowed my boyfriend and I to eat dinner together for once since he's strictly low-carb. I have some advice about sticky cheese - I picked up the parchment paper off the tray so I could unstick the edges and then flop the cheese onto a spatula to transfer. Another idea would be cutting piece of parchment paper into squares a little larger than the cheese so you can just pick it off the tray and flip it onto your mold. Best of luck!

  12. I tried this recipe and was so excited that they came out perfect! I did have to keep checking for the right color while cooking because all ovens vary. This is how I'll be eating tacos from now on. Thanks for this great recipe.

  13. This looks awesome, can't wait to try it... Do you think lo fat mozzarella would also work? I know its not round but would it still cook the same as the provolone?

    1. I have never tried it!... I try to keep everything I eat as full fat as possible... Let us know how low fat mozz. works if you do try it!... Thanks! :)

  14. These shells look like regular sized taco shells. I don't have a Costco around here. Is their provolone cheese larger in diameter than normal places or is the picture deceiving? I would love to try them and will tonight, but I'm concerned about how small the shells will be.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Yes, the provolone cheese I buy is about 6 in.... The regular tortilla size.... I personally can't find that size anywhere else.... Maybe in a deli.... Or try using a different cheese.... Small tacos would still be good!

  15. I made this recipe tonight using the very small provolone cheese circles. It worked very well, but they were small. It was still very tasty, filling and a satisfying crunch! I think I need to bake them another minute because they weren't super crunchy in the middle. I put foil over the rim of a small pressure cooker pot and draped the cheese over it to harden. Thanks for the recipe!

    1. Thanks for sharing with us about the smaller slices!... Every oven is different, so time will vary.... It took me a bit experimenting on how long to bake mine too!...So very glad you liked them!... Happy Cooking! :)

  17. If I made these at night would the shells hold up long enough to put the tacos together at work the next day for lunch???

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. YES... I would just add all the fillings when you want to eat it... I make crackers the exact same way... and they are crunchy good for days!... Enjoy!

  18. so when you put in hot taco meat the shell doesn't melt?

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. No not at all!... It can get soggy if you wait along time but no more than a regular taco shell!... Try then, they are delicious!

  19. also, if you leave flat, you can use as "bread" for sandwiches, turkey, ham etc. Also, have done the same thing in the microwave. works good too. usually slice of provolone (or any cheese is about 1-1:30 min)

  20. Made this tonight and they were awesome! We are extremely low carb (ketogenic diet) and this brought tacos back into our lives. I had to bake about 20 min, but they came out great.

  22. Since these are cooked, do you leave them out of fridge to stay crisp a day or two or do they need to be refrigerated?

    1. I left them out in Idaho, with great results, since it is very dry there... But now that I live in Georgia, I would make sure to put them into an air tight container or the humidity would soften them...

  23. Making them now!!! Fingers crossed :) I made 9 !!!

  25. These are such a good idea, can't wait to try them, & probably tastier than tacos! I've made Parmesan crisps which are pretty good, sprinkle grated Parmesan into small rounds on parchment paper & bake for ten mins or so. Nice to have something crispy.

  26. These look awesome! I've never used sliced cheese for "cheese chips" I usually shred it. Definitely going to try this one. :) (Not zero carbs though - all cheese has carbs - the labels just round them off to zero - not a lot but not zero :) )

  27. Oh my these look amazing!! I never would have thought to use cheese to make the taco shells. What a genius idea.

    1. I have never baked them on foil.... so I am not sure how that would work... If you try it, let us know if it works or not... Parchment is what I use!... Thanks!!!

  29. Just made this today. I used havarti cheese, since that's what I had. Turkey Bacon. Hot sauce instead of taco sauce. Delish!
