~ Provolone Taco Shells

Recipe from Kathryn
Provolone Taco Shells

Ingredients:
Round Provolone Cheese slices
...(I bought mine at Costco-BelGioioso Cheese Slice Mild Provolone Cheese)
Garlic powder
Mexican Spices

Oven 375 degrees

Place Parchment paper on a cookie sheet....Spray lightly with nonstick cooking spray. Evenly space 3 slices of Provolone Cheese on the parchment.. Sprinkle lightly with garlic powder and Mexican spices.... I used a salt-free Mexican seasoning blend, from "The Spice Hunter", bought at my local Co-op.....Bake for 9-10 minutes until color is right...Then, I immediately picked up each shell with a straight edged spatula and place over the edge of a foil thickened edge of a pan to cool....you must do this quickly so they won't crack as they cool quickly and harden.....
Now fill these with taco fillings!.... Yummy!

This is my favorite cheese to use!... It works the best that I have tried so far.... BelGioioso Cheese Slice Mild Provolone Cheese from Costco...

....UPDATE....
I now use this pan... It is called "Quick Taco"..... I turn it UPSIDE-DOWN, and use it to cool my cooked shells on...WORKS GREAT!!!

(Makes 3 shells....each shell= 50 cal/ 0 net carbs/12 fat/11 prot.)

    2. Mine stuck horribly to the parchment paper :(

  3. I had them stick before... I now make sure to spray the parchment... And after if is baked, remove it immediately... No more sticking at all... Happy cooking!

  4. Have you tried baking these by hanging the cheese slices over the edge of a foil thickened pan, then take out to cool?

    1. The cheese gets very melted before and hardens as it cools.... I would imagine it would drip down.... Personally I would bake flat on sprayed parchment.... :)

  5. I did not have any luck with these, mine did not look anything like the picture. I bought sargento provolone cheese, they were, how do I put this very holy and very greasy. I tried different methods with 12 slices. Nothing worked.. kinda bummed.

    1. I would be frustrated too!... I use Belgioioso sliced mild provolone... About 6 inches across...

Make sure you use parchment.. Not waxed paper

Make sure you spray the parchment

Bake til color is lightly golden

Remove immediately with a sharp flat edged spatula

There are a few tiny holes... But not a lot

Sorry you are having trouble... Maybe try another type of cheese like cheddar etc

    2. Sargent did not work for me either - looking into other brands and types.

  7. If you're only making a few, just microwave them on parchment for about a minute or until they turn golden brown. Then take them out and hang them over something to shape them. A lot quicker and easier than using the oven.

  8. I made these and they were great, however they never fully hardened back up and were kind of greasy. Is this normal? Do yours become crisp?

    1. NO, mine are nice a crispy.... It might be the cheese you used or you might need you cook it a bit longer... They can take practice to turn out perfect every time... Good luck on your next try!... Happy cooking!

  9. Hi Kathryn.. I made the shells today but tried a different method. I used a paper plate sprayed with cooking spray and the microwave. It was so easy it only took 1:25. It's perfect.

  10. As I was baking some, my husband fried them on a flat skillet, flipped them so they are good and crispy on both sides. His version won because it was so fast... About 3 minutes. Thanks for the great idea!

  12. I always wonder how to figure the calories on things like pepperoni chips and these provolone shells. How did you figure out how many calories a shell is after it's cooked since it is about 100 cal before. Thanks.

    1. I calculate the amount used on the nutrition label on the product... so if it says 1 slice is x amount of calories... that is what I use.... or in the case of pepperoni chips... check the package and weigh or count the slices per serving and eat accordingly... I just use the raw amounts even though I cook them... hope that helps a bit... :)

  13. Worked really well. It wasn't crispy, but it was firm and worked great as a little taco. Great low carb option :) Thanks!

Thank you again for the great recipe. They are about the size of street tacos and I made shrimp tacos with cilantro. O my goodness they were incredible and my husband loved them also.

  15. Experimented with these tonight - Darn it I was clean out of parchment - used no-stick aluminum foil. They spread out and became a little square - had to cut them apart but they did okay - i tried a few on a paper plate in the microwave for 1:30 and they looked beautiful but were a little thinner than the ones in the oven. Tasted great. Next time I'll go with the parchment and see how it goes - Oh and BTW, I'm a sucker for gadgets so i purchased the Quick Taco pan - works great - 8.99 on Amazon.
